DECEMBER 29, 2007 - COLOR TIMING
Happy Holidays! Many thanks to those of you who have e-mailed me the past couple of months with messages of support and excitement. They meant a lot to me and to the project.
We rung in Christmas with some color-timing. Dave was up from Philly, and we spent today working on a couple of moments from the film that are in their final cut.
The "Color" program that comes with Final Cut Studio 2 has opened some new doors, and the possibilities have me really excited. For the first time, we have access to a tool that makes it easy to do the lighting-effects you find on much larger-budget projects. Want to go dark for a scary scene but don't want to lose light or detail on a face? Bamf. Done. Want to use light as art? Nothing to it.
Dave likes the process so much he's decided to become a professional colorist, which can only bode well for the project.
Here are some samples of the before-and-after. I'm sorry I keep using the same screenshots over and over - the movie is pretty short as it is, and I can't show you the *really* cool stuff without giving too much away...

In these scenes, all the elements have to work together to create danger and foreboding. This is not a happy movie. Bad things happen to good characters. And we needed a look that matched the tenor of the different scenes. At the same time, I want to achieve as close to a "film look" as possible. Color is our tool to do just that.
I wanted to check in and let you know some cool stuff was happening. Once a scene is color-timed, it's ready for visual effects. We'll be starting with the 2D effects, a.k.a lightsabers and blasters. Sweet. Happy New Year!!!
